The Sims 1 and 2 have been re-released in a new bundle to celebrate their 25th anniversary, incorporating nearly every expansion pack ever created for each game, including the pet-focused expansion pack known as Unleashed. This expansion marked the introduction of dogs, cats, gardening, and more, which enriched the gameplay experience. While currently adding pets to a family is a regular expectation in The Sims, it was a novel concept during the early days of the franchise.
In contrast to later titles in the Sims series, adopting pets in The Sims 1 can be slightly tricky. In The Sims 4, players can easily obtain a pet via their phone or computer. However, in The Sims 1, players must venture to a community lot to find a pet or foster a relationship with stray animals that may visit their home lot.
How To Get To The Pet Shop In Old Town
To pick a pet, players need to visit Pet Paradise, located at 70 Elm Street in Old Town. Travelling to Old Town can be done by calling a cab. Once at the pet shop, players can browse several small pet options such as lovebirds, fish, turtles, budgies, and iguanas.
Purchasing a small pet is straightforward; players can click on the enclosure of their choice and select "Buy." After acquiring a small pet, it will be stored in the inventory until the player returns home. At home, players will need to buy a cage in Buy Mode, and for larger pets like cats or dogs, they can direct their Sim to a designated building in the community lot.
For larger pets, players can choose between a cat or a dog, both costing 399 Simoleons. After clicking "Adopt a Cat/Dog," players can select a breed and name their new pet. The pet will follow the player, ensuring it won't be left behind. Before leaving Old Town, players can also take advantage of the pet trainer available in the community lot, who can teach pets tricks and provide training tips for obedience and housebreaking, making it easier to build a rapport with their new pet.
Adopting A Stray Pet Requires Building A Relationship
Alternatively, players may opt to adopt a stray animal instead of purchasing from a pet store. There are only eight stray animals to adopt in The Sims 1. The four stray cats include Spork, Cali, Fluffy, and Aristotle, while the dogs consist of Fifi, Buzz, Spike, and Cher.
This method is more time-consuming, and players cannot use cheats to simplify the process, but it often proves more rewarding. To adopt a stray animal, players must develop a relationship with it, starting with simple interactions such as petting it. Over time, additional interactions become available, including hug, wrestle, praise, and fetch. Building this relationship is crucial as relationships can deteriorate quickly in The Sims 1.
Once the bond is strong enough, the adoption option will become available, allowing the player to add the animal to their household. After adoption, supplies for the new pet can be purchased in Buy Mode, such as a food bowl, but players may want to visit the Old Town pet store for a collar and other accessories. Additionally, toys should also be purchased, as pets have a fun meter that needs to be attended to.
