Ontario's police watchdog is currently investigating the death of a 31-year-old woman while she was in the custody of Hamilton police.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reported that officers arrested the woman on Monday for alleged "failure to comply offences," and she was subsequently placed in a cell at a police station.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the SIU states she was found in medical distress. The woman was immediately transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The SIU has announced that an autopsy is scheduled, and a team of investigators has been assigned to this case. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to reach out to the SIU.
As an independent civilian agency, the SIU investigates incidents involving fatalities or serious injuries, as well as cases of alleged sexual assault or instances where a firearm was discharged at a person.
