Drone Attack in Sumy Highlights Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine
A recent drone attack in Sumy, Ukraine, resulted in injuries and evacuations, further illustrating the ongoing humanitarian crisis as the conflict with Russia escalates.
The Shahed drone blew out a wall and surrounding windows in the apartment block in Sumy, a major city, just after 1 a.m., according to the Sumy regional administration. Four people were rescued from the rubble, and a child was among the injured, with a total of 120 people evacuated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, labelling it "a terrible tragedy, a terrible Russian crime."
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which is set to enter its fourth year next month, has resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 Ukrainian civilians, as reported by the United Nations.
Civilians continue to suffer during the conflict, with Russian assaults on the power grid leaving many without heating and running water. Numerous individuals have been evacuated from regions along the lengthy 1,000-kilometre (600-mile) front line, as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back the more significant Russian army.
In a continuous overnight operation, Russia launched more than 80 drones at Ukraine, according to the air force, with many being intercepted or disrupted through electronic jamming.
In the southern Odesa region of Ukraine, Russian drones also damaged a hospital and two apartment buildings, as stated by regional head Oleh Kiper. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
