The State Department plans to acquire armored Tesla Cybertrucks for $400 million, raising concerns about conflicts of interest amid Musk's role in government spending efficiency.
The State Department is planning to purchase armored versions of Tesla's Cybertruck for $400 million, according to public procurement documents.
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, has been a significant government contractor, accumulating over $13 billion in federal contracts in the last five years, alongside advising President Trump on cutting government spending.
The procurement forecast for 2025 lists this purchase among several intended acquisitions and notes that the Cybertruck's high-strength stainless steel body makes it particularly suitable for armored transport.
However, this potential deal could raise conflict of interest concerns. Musk's efforts to reduce government costs might be seen as undermined by his profitable contracts.
On social media, Musk has criticized what he views as government waste, emphasizing the need for efficiency. He has previously pointed out allegedly overpriced items within the government.
Despite the high expectations, sales of the Cybertruck have been modest, with only 39,000 units sold since its introduction in late 2023. At a starting price of $80,000, affordability could be an issue for many potential buyers.
Additionally, not all of the $400 million order will go to Tesla. Companies like Armormax, specializing in vehicle upgrades and armor installations, will also receive a portion of the funding.
Armormax's operations manager mentioned interest in their products from the Trump administration, confirming that they convert vehicles into protected "cocoons" using features like bulletproof glass and other advanced protection equipment.
In addition to the Cybertruck, the State Department's procurement plan includes smaller quantities of armored vehicles from other suppliers, including $40 million worth of BMW SUVs.
