Earl Carter has introduced a bill to purchase Greenland and rename it "Red, White, and Blueland." The bill calls for updating related Geographic names in the U.S., sparking controversy and historical reminders.
Yesterday, Earl "Buddy" Carter, a Republican from Georgia, introduced a two-page bill titled "Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025." When the proposal was shared with me, I initially thought it was a meme, but it is indeed real.
The purpose of the bill is to enable former President Trump's efforts to purchase Greenland and rename it "Red, White and Blueland," in line with his desire to expand America's brand.
This legislation would require the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to update the name of Greenland for users accessing official maps and documents in the United States.
With climate change leading to melting sea ice, new travel routes through the Arctic have emerged, raising concerns about increased influence from Russia and China in the North Atlantic.
Denmark governs Greenland, and its current leader, MĂște B. Egede, has expressed that his people are not interested in becoming Americans. In response, a "Denmarkification" petition has been launched and has gained over 200,000 signatures, demanding Denmark to purchase the state of California at a proposed cost of $1 trillion.
Historically, in 1910, the U.S. administration under President William Howard Taft explored the possibility of buying Greenland due to its strategic importance, but discussions were shifted towards more pressing issues with World War I approaching.
Furthermore, the GNIS has officially updated the name "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America." In accordance with Google's practices, changes reflecting this new name have been implemented across their platforms for users in the U.S., while users in Mexico will still see "Gulf of Mexico." For international users, both names will be displayed together.
As of 2025, President Donald J. Trump has signed 60 executive orders, impacting various policies from foreign relations to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Despite some dissent from the judiciary, the administration appears poised to continue evolving the language and policies within the country.
In summary, significant changes can quickly reflect upon our maps and daily lives, including the potential renaming of Greenland's airport code from GOH to RWB for Red White and Blueland.
