Newly released video captured the moment the driver of an SUV escaped just before the vehicle was struck by a Utah Transit Authority (UTA) passenger train in Layton, Utah, on February 4, 2025.
The video, captured from inside the locomotive, shows the train speeding towards a railroad crossing, where a white vehicle is seen partially blocking the track.
As the train approached, the operator could be heard expressing frustration, "Oh, come on," while the train horn blared in warning.
Unfortunately, the train was unable to stop in time, crashing into the SUV and producing a notable thump from within the train.
Another viewpoint from nearby security cameras reveals the driver approaching the crossing with flashing red lights and a lowered gate arm. Instead of stopping, the white SUV continued through, almost clipping the bottom of the gate.
Realizing the predicament, the driver attempted to reverse but struck the gate arm, ultimately blocking part of the tracks as they exited the vehicle and walked away.
Seconds later, the train collided with the SUV, sending it into the gate arm and significantly damaging the front end.
UTA public information officer Gavin Gustafson remarked on the fortunate outcome of no injuries, explaining that it’s easy for observers to critique the driver's decisions in hindsight. He emphasized the potential for blocked views and the instinctual reactions in moments of shock.
The crash caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, with repairs to the gate and crossing post completed within 24 hours, aided by the city of Layton.
