Witold Pilecki A Hero of Auschwitz's Liberation Story
Witold Pilecki infiltrated Auschwitz to reveal its horrors, documenting atrocities and inspiring resistance. His heroism remained unknown for decades, only gaining recognition after the Soviet era.
On 27 January 1945, prisoners at Auschwitz witnessed their liberation as soldiers of the First Ukrainian Front opened the gates under the infamous words "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("Work Makes Freedom"). This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the notorious concentration camp where over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered.
