Yankees Seek to Fill Third Base Spot While Pursuing Arenado Trade
The New York Yankees had a strong offseason by acquiring some of the best free agents. However, they now face the challenge of filling a spot after Gleyber Torres' departure. The Yanks have enhanced their offense and pursued strong pitchers for their starting rotation, with a robust bullpen ready for another playoff run.
General Manager Brian Cashman noted that Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s flexibility will aid in exploring other options. The team is open to moving Chisholm as a replacement for Torres, but a vacancy at third base still needs addressing. Cashman is prepared to promote internal players, with Oswaldo Cabrera and D.J. LeMahieu as potential candidates for third base, while still eyeing strong external options.
Initially, the Yankees were believed to be interested in Alex Bregman; however, he does not seem to fit their needs. Another option on the table is Nolan Arenado, as the Cardinals are ready to trade him, and the Yankees could part ways with Marcus Stroman in this deal.
If negotiations go smoothly, the Yankees might secure a pivotal trade before opening day. Arenado would seamlessly fit into the third base role, providing financial ease. Conversely, Stroman could be a valuable acquisition for the Cardinals.
Furthermore, the Bronx Bombers have re-signed Tim Hill to a one-year deal worth 2.5 million CAD, including a 3 million CAD club option after the 2025 season and a 350k buyout option. Despite his recent struggles with the White Sox, Hill excelled for the Yankees, posting a 2.05 ERA in the second half of the season.
The Yankees' bullpen is formidable following the acquisition of Devin Williams and Mark Leiter Jr. Players like Luke Weaver, Jake Cousins, and Ian Hamilton are also crucial to the lineup. The starting rotation is filled with All-Star pitchers, and the offence boasts significant talent with additional sluggers like Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt.
The ideal trade the Yankees should consider is bringing in Arenado to address their gaps. If Arenado joins the roster, the Yanks may discover the perfect replacement. Meanwhile, another AL East rival is also targeting Arenado, as the Cardinals aim to facilitate the trade before spring training.
