Batman lore is undergoing a significant transformation as Commissioner Gordon steps into a new role in Gotham City. Jim Gordon changed the DC Universe's status quo when he retired as the GCPD's police commissioner in 2020, but after several years, he is making a comeback to the force. However, he will not reclaim his previous title, as the new commissioner likely intends to assign Batman's longtime ally a much less prominent role.
In Batman #157, authored by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Tony S. Daniel, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles, Batman meets with Gordon after the latter's manipulation into committing a murder leads to a significant life change. Gordon informs Batman of his intentions to "reapply to the force," signalling the beginning of an exciting new era for this beloved character.
Since Gordon's retirement during the Joker War event in 2020, he has been replaced by other contenders in the GCPD. Formerly, Renee Montoya filled his position as commissioner until her vigilante activities caused her role to falter. After her identity as the Question was exposed, she moved to the Justice League's Watchtower. Meanwhile, Vandal Savage has risen to power in the department.
Vandal Savage's rise began in a back-up story from Batman #140, where he demonstrated his brutal power, capturing the attention of the Court of Owls. Following his actions, he was sworn in as the new Commissioner in Batman #147, officially replacing Jim Gordon.
While Gordon may not become commissioner again soon, he could potentially work his way back up the ranks, although he acknowledges that challenges lie ahead under Vandal Savage’s regime.
Batman #157 is currently available from DC Comics.
