Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove directed New York prosecutors to dismiss bribery charges against Mayor Adams, citing campaign distractions and the need for his focus on law enforcement priorities.
In a two-page memo obtained by The Associated Press, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove informed prosecutors in New York that they were "directed to dismiss" the bribery charges against Mayor Adams immediately.
Bove clarified that the order was not guided by the strength of evidence in the case but was issued because the charges were brought too close to Adams’ re-election campaign, potentially distracting from the mayor's efforts to support the Trump administration's law-and-order priorities.
"The pending prosecution has unduly restricted Mayor Adams' ability to devote full attention and resources to the illegal immigration and violent crime," Bove stated.
Moreover, the memo instructed New York prosecutors to refrain from taking "additional investigative steps" against the Democrat until after the mayoral election in November. However, it left the door open for the possibility that charges could be refiled following a review after the election.
