Calgary woman Danielle MacPherson thwarted porch pirates attempting to steal her Hello Fresh meal kit, impressing many with her brave actions.
A 30-year-old Calgary woman, Danielle MacPherson, has become an overnight internet hero after a trio of porch pirates attempted to steal her Hello Fresh meal kit from her front step.
On Sunday morning, while enjoying her coffee, MacPherson noticed a stranger approaching her walkway just minutes after her delivery arrived.
“I noticed her walk up and try to steal it. She was wearing a ski mask and there was a getaway car following shortly behind,” said MacPherson.
Wearing only her bathrobe, pyjamas, and slippers in the bitter cold, MacPherson leapt into action and threw open her front door, running after the thief.
“As soon as I flung the door open, she took off running, as if she wouldn’t drop the package! But she finally did.”
MacPherson quickly jumped over the discarded package to continue her pursuit.
“I gave her a little push to say, 'get out of here.'”
A man near the silver getaway car remarked something unbelievable to her.
“I don’t know what kind of reaction they were expecting, but that’s what they got,” she said with a cheeky grin.
MacPherson, who is a welder with a background in martial arts, managed to fix a slipper that had come loose during the chase and was mindful of noting the license plate number amidst the chaos.
The car sped away while MacPherson ran back to her house, repeating the license plate number to help remember it.
The chaotic encounter unfolded in seconds and was recorded by her front door camera.
The video shared online received numerous comments praising her actions, from, “Some heroes wear bathrobes, atta girl!” to, “Calgary girls are built different.”
Police are currently investigating the incident and hope to lay charges.
“She did the right thing getting out there and shouting, say 'Hey, what are you doing?' alerting them to your presence -- but we wouldn’t recommend chasing after them,” said Sgt. Nick Wilsher of the Calgary Police Crime Prevention Unit.
“You just don’t know what they have on them or what they could do -- there could be that one occasion where it can turn into something more serious, even fatal.”
MacPherson said she is considering this advice but admits she is unsure of her response if a similar situation arises again. In the meantime, she stated that Hello Fresh is sending her next delivery for free.
