Barkley sets a new Super Bowl record in his debut while the Eagles lead the Chiefs significantly, marking a memorable day that coincides with his 28th birthday.
The AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Barkley needed only 30 yards to surpass the total set by Davis in 1998 when he helped the Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl. That season, Davis was the last running back to win Super Bowl MVP.
Barkley ran the ball on the first offensive play of the Super Bowl and achieved the mark after a slow first half with a 2-yard run on the last play of the half. He finished with 12 carries for 31 yards, averaging a meagre 2.6 yards per carry, whereas he averaged 5.8 yards in the regular season.
The Eagles performed adequately without Barkley's usual impressive production. With two interceptions by the defence and two total touchdowns from Jalen Hurts, the Eagles led the Chiefs 24-0 at halftime.
Barkley had multiple reasons to celebrate on Sunday—not only did he set a Super Bowl record and play in his first Super Bowl during his first season with the Eagles, but he also turned 28 years old.
