Armie Hammer has opened up about the cannibalism controversy during a recent appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast. The actor, known for his roles in The Social Network and Call Me By Your Name, faced backlash in 2021 when text messages surfaced online alleging cannibalistic fetishes. Despite these allegations, Hammer has consistently denied claims of being a cannibal, insisting that the messages were taken out of context.
During the podcast, Hammer clarified that his comment about being "100 percent a cannibal" was meant as a joke. When pressed on whether he ever actually consumed human flesh, he firmly stated, "So no."
The controversy, according to Hammer, forced him into a period of self-examination. He described his experience over the last three years as an opportunity to "learn to love" himself, claiming that the scandal was "the greatest thing that ever happened" to him.
Discussing the context of the messages released, Hammer noted that the full conversation was not presented and could have been misinterpreted. He admitted to being selfish in past relationships, acknowledging his faults without making excuses.
In the wake of the controversy, several women accused Hammer of rape and abuse, severely impacting his acting career. Although no criminal charges were brought against him, Hammer lost multiple projects and representation in Hollywood. However, he has recently begun to resurface in the industry, appearing in Georgie Leahy's music video for "Typical Squeeze" and has roles in movies Frontier Crucible and The Dark Knight.
Despite these efforts, Hammer may face difficulties as major studios may still be hesitant to work with him due to the lingering controversies surrounding his past.
