Perth misses out on Rugby World Cup quarter final hosting in 2027
Perth has been snubbed for a Rugby World Cup quarter final hosting opportunity in 2027. Optus Stadium has been deemed not large enough to host one of the tournament's knockout matches despite being the third-biggest stadium in Australia.
WA tourism minister Rita Saffioti stated that the state government received feedback indicating that Optus Stadium's capacity, rather than its isolation and travel factors, was the reason for missing out on the key games.
However, Optus Stadium was confirmed to host the opening match of the tournament on October 1, which will feature the Wallabies.
