Catherine O'Hara Reflects on Wigs and Wildfires in Schitt's Creek Journey
Catherine O'Hara, known for her role as Moira Rose on the acclaimed Netflix series Schitt's Creek, always wanted to showcase various wigs throughout the show. At 70 years old, she revealed her excitement to wear different hairpieces from the very beginning, despite her co-star, Eugene Levy, expressing uncertainty about how it would come together.
In an interview with UsWeekly, O'Hara shared, "At the very beginning, I said, 'I'd like to wear different wigs [in] different scenes,' and Eugene was like, 'Um, OK, how would that work?' They made it work!"
During the recent LA wildfires, O'Hara opted to save some costumes from her role when she faced evacuation. However, she admitted that she couldn't take many wigs due to her inability to care for them properly. "I was offered a lot of wigs, but I don't have a setup to take good care of them, so I only brought [home] the Vivien wig, which was my soap opera character's wig. That went with me in the evacuation!" she explained.
O'Hara appreciated collaborating with costume designers who understood her vision of creating a "crazy character" on screen. She stated, "It's just fun to work with people who collaborate and allow you to create an inconsistently crazy character with an inconsistent way of speaking and an amazing wardrobe. The show relaunched opportunities for all of us."
Although O'Hara did not lose her home in the wildfires, she acknowledged the sheer "luck" involved and expressed her desire to help others affected by the disaster. She reflected, "It didn't feel right praying for my home to be saved. We were really lucky. The least you can do is feel horrible and just try to find ways to help others."
