A fire at a Cheltenham factory housing lithium-ion batteries has led to a significant emergency response, with warnings issued for nearby residents about smoke. Roads are closed and traffic may be affected.
Lithium-ion batteries have caught fire inside a Cheltenham factory, prompting a major emergency response as fire crews attempt to battle the blaze.
The fire was reported at 8.38am, with Fire Rescue Victoria arriving at the Chesterville Road factory within five minutes.
The factory, a 60x60m building belonging to the Phoenix Technology Group, was engulfed in flames, prompting fire crews to escalate their response and call for additional resources.
A thick cloud of black smoke could be seen billowing from the area and residents in Cheltenham, Highett, Moorabbin, and Moorabbin East have been issued community advice for smoke.
"There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions," the warning reads.
"Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond.
"To prevent the smell of smoke entering your home or business, close windows and doors."
Chesterville Road and Keys Road have been closed, and authorities said traffic in the area may be affected.
Phoenix Technology Group distribute satellite TV equipment, solar panels, lithium batteries and back-up power systems.
