The Shakopee City Council is pursuing a grant to demolish horse barns at Canterbury Park to make way for development. The state has recently funded another city cleanup project.
The Shakopee City Council has approved a proposal to apply for a Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development grant aimed at demolishing 30 acres of horse barns at Canterbury Park during its meeting on January 22.
The DEED grant would help cover the expenses related to the demolition of the blighted barns, as explained by Director of Planning and Development, Michael Kerski.
A spokesperson from Canterbury indicated that discussions are already underway regarding the relocation of the barns, given that the current site is prime real estate for development.
Kerski noted that the state recently allocated $353,000 to Shakopee for environmental cleanup efforts at Riverfront Bluff, which includes the removal of trash and hazardous waste from the area. This funding is part of a larger redevelopment fund, which Shakopee hopes to apply towards the barn demolition project.
"The grant considers the current worth of the land with the barns in place, deducts the demolition cost, and assesses feasibility," Kerski said. "This approach makes the project more viable."
If approved for the grant, new barns would be constructed between Shenandoah Drive and County Road 83. However, the grant application does not specify the anticipated cost for the demolition process.
