Newsom signs $50 million bill to protect California from Trump administration policies
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a $50 million bill to counteract potential policies from former President Trump, allocating funds for legal services to protect vulnerable residents against federal actions.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially signed a special legislative package worth $50 million aimed at counteracting potential policies from former President Donald Trump. This package, which is part of the "Trump-proofing" initiative, was proposed by Newsom for approval by Democrats following Trump's election.
Newsom stated that the bill is designed to bolster funding for legal services that are crucial in protecting the civil rights of California's most vulnerable populations. These groups include individuals with disabilities, homeless youth, victims of human trafficking and wage theft, those facing illegal evictions, and immigrants.
He emphasized that none of the funds allocated in this legislation would be used for immigration-related legal services for noncitizens convicted of serious or violent felonies.
The package, which received approval from both the state Senate and Assembly, allocates $25 million to the California Department of Justice to aid legal actions against the federal government's policies under Trump. The other $25 million is earmarked for legal aid organizations to support undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
Throughout Trump's administration, Newsom has instigated numerous lawsuits challenging Trump's policies.
Despite the tensions, Newsom has also collaborated with Trump on securing federal disaster relief for the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. The two leaders have engaged in discussions, with Trump visiting California and Newsom traveling to Washington, D.C. to further dialogue.
In a recent statement, Newsom said, "We're working across the aisle, as we always have, to ensure survivors have the resources and support they need." He expressed gratitude to Trump for visiting affected communities.
In response to Newsom's announcement of the new initiative, Trump criticized the term "Trump-Proof," suggesting it undermines efforts to improve California.
