Selena Gomez's Emotional Appeal Meets Firm Response on Immigration Policy
Selena Gomez expressed her feelings on deportations via social media, prompting a firm rebuttal from border czar Tom Homan, who emphasized the importance of enforcing immigration laws.
Selena Gomez took to social media on Monday to express her emotions regarding mass deportations. In a now-deleted Instagram story, Gomez recorded herself in tears, speaking out against the Trump administration's deportations of illegal aliens. She described feeling a connection with those deported, saying, "All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don't understand. I'm so sorry. I wish that I could have done something, but I can't. I don't know what to do."
In response, conservatives raised several points regarding her remarks. Critics questioned her use of the phrase "my people," and her inclusion of a Mexican flag emoji, considering she is an American citizen. They emphasized that her identification with individuals from other countries appears to overshadow her duty to support her home country against threats associated with an open border.
Additionally, they pointed out that the individuals being deported are not simply families seeking a better life but include serious criminals. ICE has been transparent about the nature of those being deported, which often includes DUI convicts, sex traffickers, and more dangerous offenders.
Border czar Tom Homan was quick to respond to Gomez's emotional video. He dismissed her sentiments as an emotional manipulation tactic and highlighted that President Trump won the election largely on the promise of securing borders. In an interview with Fox News, Homan cited alarming statistics about the southern border under Biden's administration, mentioning two million known gotaways and a significant increase in sex trafficking and terrorism cases.
"We're going to do this job, and we're going to enforce the laws of this country," Homan asserted, reinforcing his stance without offering apologies for the deportations. He added that the current actions are for the overall benefit of the nation and emphasized the importance of ongoing enforcement.
The reaction to Gomez's display of emotion was seen as predictable, with critics indicating that such overt emotional appeals often serve to advance detrimental policies.
