Zack Baun Emerges as Top NFL Inside Linebacker Ahead of Super Bowl LIX
Zack Baun's impressive performance has transformed him into one of the NFL's best inside linebackers ahead of Super Bowl LIX, prompting the Eagles to consider a contract extension.
Zack Baun's rise to becoming one of the NFL's elite defenders in 2024 has surprised even his new team, the Philadelphia Eagles. After signing a one-year, $1.6 million contract in March 2024, the Eagles certainly did not expect Baun to turn into what he has become during the regular season and playoffs.
Regarded as arguably the best inside linebacker in the league, Baun’s transition from edge rusher to inside linebacker has been remarkable. As the Eagles prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on February 9 in New Orleans, there is a compelling case for the team to secure Baun with a new contract for the 2025 season.
Initially, the Eagles believed they were acquiring a rotational edge rusher and a contributor on special teams when they signed Baun. ESPN's Tim McManus clarified that Baun has instead evolved into one of the top off-ball linebackers in the NFL. With Nakobe Dean recovering from a torn patellar tendon, the urgency to extend Baun's contract has intensified.
In his first year as a full-time starter, Baun achieved NFL All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, recording 151 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 interception, and 5 forced fumbles, while playing on the league's top defense.
"It makes me think there's other players out there who might be out of position...and just need to move spots," Baun said after the NFC Championship Game, reflecting on his own successful position change. "And they need to just get that opportunity, to find that right fit."
During the regular season, Bleacher Report's Matt Holder advocated for the Eagles to re-sign Baun, an indication of his increasing importance to the team.
