NYC rat problem highlights global rodent issue and home protection tips
The rat populations are rising globally, as highlighted by a recent study. Effective home protection against rodents is crucial, with steps to identify signs and secure food sources.
As warmer weather approaches, the issue of rodents invading homes is becoming a major concern. A recent study published in the Science Advances journal examined rat populations in 16 cities around the world, revealing that 11 of these cities have seen an increase in complaints regarding infestations.
While major cities like New York City, San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Toronto are notably affected, smaller metropolitan areas such as New Orleans and Louisville also appeared on the list, although their populations have actually declined. Researchers attribute the rise in infestations largely to changing weather patterns and warming temperatures.
Jonathan Richardson, a biologist at the University of Richmond and lead author of the study, explains that changes in the seasons influence the mating habits of rats. This results in an extended period for foraging and reproductive activities. He emphasizes that the shift in seasonal timings can lead to rats being active for weeks longer than before.
For homeowners, recognizing the signs of a rodent infestation is crucial. Jim Fredericks, chief entomologist for the National Pest Management Association, advises looking for indicators such as rat droppings, chewed surfaces, and potential entry points in the home.
To prevent rats from entering, experts suggest assessing your property as if you were a rodent attempting to invade. Key areas to inspect include doors, windows, and places where pipes or cables enter the home. Additionally, securing food, both indoors and outdoors, is essential to deter rodents.
Regular cleaning and monitoring for signs of rats will also help in early detection. For those living in warmer climates, that might include checking attics and yards.
In cases of severe infestations, it may be necessary to contact a pest control professional. These experts offer comprehensive evaluations and humane extermination methods to address rodent issues effectively.
