AI-Generated Summary
Kristi Noem advocates for the abolition of FEMA in its current structure, suggesting local decision-making should guide disaster relief efforts. This comes amid scrutiny of FEMA's efficiency and fund allocation.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressed her support for dismantling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in its current form during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union." This stance aligns with President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who have suggested that shutting down FEMA may be a viable option.

Noem indicated that Trump is evaluating the situation with his team. "He can. And I believe that he will do that evaluation with his team," she stated, emphasizing the need for Congress to be involved in making any changes to ensure effective aid continues to reach those in need following disasters.

During her visit to Hurricane Helene victims in Asheville, North Carolina, Noem reflected on her experience overseeing 12 natural disasters that required FEMA's involvement while she was governor of South Dakota. She underscored the importance of local officials in making faster, better decisions during crises.

Noem remarked, "I would say yes, get rid of FEMA the way it exists today," highlighting the necessity for resources to assist disaster victims, but advocating for local control over decision-making processes.

She criticized FEMA for its perceived biases, recalling how some homes in hurricane-affected areas with pro-Trump signs were overlooked during the agency's aid distribution under the previous administration. Noem noted Trump's effectiveness in quickly addressing open FEMA cases during his presidency.

Noem defended Musk as his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) conducts an audit of federal agencies, reassuring that their collaboration aims to improve departmental efficiency and reduce waste. Musk claimed that FEMA had misused funds intended for disaster relief by sending $59 million to house illegal migrants in luxury hotels.
