Having watched this movie at least a hundred times over the years, I find that while almost every frame is etched into my brain, each viewing offers a new perspective.
This time was unique, as I saw it in a proper theater and with a new 4K remaster. It was, without a doubt, the best quality I have ever experienced. The clarity was fascinating to witness.
While the artwork in Macross: Do You Remember Love? is renowned among anime fans, viewing it up close revealed that some shots were not entirely in focus. This was somewhat noticeable in previous Blu-ray releases, but it became evident on the big screen that certain scenes were not captured correctly.
Initially, I thought this issue was due to the storage of the master, but now I believe it has always been this way.
That said, the 4K remaster does an incredible job of cleaning up the remaining frames, significantly benefiting the film's presentation.
Moreover, witnessing the designs of Shoji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake in this level of detail was incredible. The complexity of the mecha designs has always impressed me, but the big screen remaster further amplifies their impact.
Additionally, the previous censorship of the PlayStation 3-era Blu-ray has been removed. The movie features some bloody segments and decapitations that raised the CERO game rating, which could have hindered sales of the old PlayStation 3 boxset. Now that there is no game bundled with the disc, the censorship is lifted, preserving the film's integrity.
A new 4K remaster Blu-ray release for Macross: Do You Remember Love? is set to arrive soon. Having attended the theatrical showing allowed me to acquire a copy early, and a review will follow. This Blu-ray also features English subtitles for the first time.
