Google Maps to Reflect Trump's Naming Changes in the US
Google Maps will implement President Trump's recent naming changes in the United States, specifically showing the Gulf of America and Mount McKinley, according to Fox News Digital.
The updates will occur once the Department of the Interior revises the Geographic Names Information System.
"We've received a few questions about naming within Google Maps," Google stated on X on Monday evening. "We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources."
Following the official updates, Google will promptly refresh Google Maps in the U.S. to reflect the new names for Mount McKinley and Gulf of America.
According to Google, it will continue its tradition of showing local official names when there are variations between countries. "Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names," Google mentioned, noting the same applies in the U.S.
This adjustment from Google comes after President Trump directed the Department of the Interior to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and to restore the name Mount McKinley for Alaska's peak, which was previously renamed Denali by President Obama in 2015, following a request from the Alaska legislature.
