DJ Unk Atlanta rapper passes away at 42
DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper known for hits like "Walk It Out" and "2 Step," has died at 42. Born Anthony Platt, he was a pivotal figure in snap music, a subgenre of crunk that gained prominence in the mid-2000s.
Unk gained fame in 2006 with "Walk It Out," which peaked at No. 2 and "2 Step," reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart. His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed his death on Facebook, expressing her grief: "I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER."
Additionally, Big Oomp Records, Unk's former label, shared a statement on social media mourning his loss: "It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as 'DJ Unk.' DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer but a cornerstone of our label."
The cause of Unk's death remains undisclosed. He began his music career in 1998, forming the Southern Style DJs before signing with Big Oomp Records, where he released his debut album "Beat'n Down Yo Block!" in 2006. The album featured guest appearances from artists like Jazze Pha and DJ Montay.
In 2009, Unk suffered a heart attack, attributed to a combination of nonstop touring, unhealthy habits, and stress. After this incident, his music releases slowed down, although he did perform at the BET Awards in 2023.
