Trump signs Laken Riley Act directing immigrants to Guantanamo facilities
During the signing of the Laken Riley Act, Trump announced, "We're going to send them out to Guantanamo." He then proceeded to sign a presidential memorandum to guide federal officials in preparing facilities for receiving criminal immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
Tom Homan, the U.S. border czar, stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would oversee the operation of the facility. However, specifics of the plan have not yet been clarified.
It's important to note the historical context of the U.S. naval base in Cuba, which is most famous for detaining suspects in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Additionally, a small, separate facility at this base has been used for many years to hold migrants, specifically those intercepted while attempting to illegally traverse the sea to the U.S.
The Migrant Operations Center primarily accommodates individuals from Haiti and Cuba who are caught trying to reach the U.S. by boat.
