Federal Government Commits 162 Million for Jasper Recovery
The federal government has announced a $162 million commitment to Jasper, Alberta's recovery, which includes funding for housing and tax revenue support coinciding with a new $8 million provincial investment.
The federal government announced on Thursday that it is committing $162 million to support recovery efforts in Jasper, Alberta. A significant portion of this funding will be allocated to both interim and long-term housing solutions.
This announcement follows a new $8 million commitment from the Alberta government, also revealed on Thursday. This provincial funding aims to address a shortfall in property tax revenues due to the destruction of homes caused by a recent fire.
The federal announcement comes in response to criticisms from the Alberta government, which expressed concerns that the Liberal government had not invested sufficiently in Jasper's recovery initiatives. Additionally, there were complaints that Parks Canada and the local municipality were reluctant to adopt the province's preferred housing strategies.
Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland stated that the federal funding represents a "lifeline for families seeking stability after such a devastating event." He further emphasized that the provincial funding for property taxes is "critical" to the town's recovery process.
