Aircraft Incident Causes Emergency Response Near Washington Airport
An aircraft incident near Washington has prompted an ongoing investigation by the FAA, with emergency personnel responding and searching for potential casualties.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has reported a collision involving an aircraft, with the investigation currently ongoing.
Details regarding casualties have not yet been disclosed, however, all takeoffs and landings have been suspended at the airport near Washington as confirmed by local law enforcement and airport authorities.
Multiple helicopters, including those from the U.S. Park Police, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, and U.S. military, responded to the scene, which is near the Potomac River. The D.C. Fire and EMS department stated on X that fireboats were deployed to assist.
Washington police have also indicated via the social media platform X that a coordinated search-and-rescue operation is currently underway following the aircraft crash.
Footage captured from an observation camera at the nearby Kennedy Center appears to show two sets of lights typical of aircraft merging into a fireball.
The airport has confirmed that emergency personnel are attending to "an aircraft incident on the airfield."
