Tasmania Police has published its annual report on complaints against police, aligning with their commitment to accountability. The Professional Standards Complaints and Outcomes 2024 report highlights the types of complaints received, findings, and outcomes pertaining to Level 2 and 3 complaints made against police.
In 2024, Tasmania Police received a total of 194 complaints from the public, marking a decrease from 325 in 2023. Additionally, 166 internally raised matters were recorded in 2024, compared to 94 in 2023.
Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins stated, "Tasmania Police already reports annually through the Report on Government Services regarding complaints against police. Recent Productivity Commission data shows that Tasmania Police is viewed as the most professional in treating people fairly and honestly."
He acknowledged that while the 194 complaints figure is relatively low compared to the thousands of community interactions each year, it is essential to address all complaints appropriately and transparently.
"The Tasmanian community expects a high standard from its policing service, and we are entrusted with powers to ensure public safety. Complaints must be investigated thoroughly, and the outcomes should be accessible to the public," Higgins added.
Deputy Commissioner Higgins also noted the significant number of internally raised matters, emphasising accountability among officers to adhere to the values of Accountability, Integrity, Respect, and Support.
The Tasmania Police Professional Standards Command investigates both internal and external complaints, including criminal conduct and breaches of the Code of Conduct, with oversight from bodies such as the Director of Public Prosecutions, Integrity Commission, and Ombudsman.
Tasmania Police aims for excellence in community service and embraces continuous improvement as they value feedback. Community members can share feedback or compliments regarding Tasmania Police's performance through their website.
