An off-duty police officer was seriously injured during a brawl in Newtown. Police are investigating and seeking suspects of Maori, Pacific Islander, and Caucasian appearance.
An off-duty police officer has been seriously injured after being allegedly kicked and punched in the head during a brawl in a popular nightlife precinct.
Police have initiated an investigation into the night-time assault that occurred around 11pm on Wednesday in Newtown, Sydney's inner west.
Upon arrival, officers found a 25-year-old off-duty policeman unconscious on Enmore Rd. An off-duty nurse administered CPR until paramedics arrived.
The injured officer was transported to the nearby Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
It was reported that the injured officer and another off-duty officer were walking along the road when they were approached by a group of three unknown men engaged in an argument.
Both off-duty officers were assaulted, with one being knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked in the head, according to investigators.
The three assailants fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.
Investigators are currently seeking two men of Maori or Pacific Islander appearance, along with a third man of Caucasian appearance, all estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old.
Enmore Rd was designated as the first "special entertainment precinct" in NSW in late 2023, highlighting the inner-city area's status as a late-night music and hospitality hub.
This designation permits extended trading hours for certain venues and provides more flexible noise controls for local businesses.
