Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha argued that President Trump's popularity can be attributed to his embrace of policies that Democrats have abandoned for years.
During a segment on CNN's "Laura Coates Live," Rocha explained how many Democrats are still grappling with Trump's surprising victory in November.
One caller asked, "My question is, Donald Trump is a very scary guy, what makes him so popular?"
Rocha responded, "This is my favorite question. We've talked about it on this program before. I joined the Democratic Party in 1989 because I wanted to fight NAFTA. I wanted to drain the swamps. I wanted to ensure my tax dollars weren't going to foreign wars or wasted."
He continued, "That sounds like Donald Trump today. We lose to him because we've allowed him to steal our verbiage. We have stopped discussing working Americans, keeping America safe, and focusing on the issues that originally drew me to this party. He is scary, but he isn't scary enough for people to lose elections because he echoes the sentiments of the Democrats when I joined."
Former Trump campaign advisor Bryan Lanza countered Rocha's claims, stating that Trump is not scary compared to the alternatives.
Lanza elaborated, "What is truly scary is an out-of-control bureaucracy invading our lives every day. People want to change from that."
He concluded, "I'm sorry you feel scared, but many people are becoming more comfortable with the current situation," to which Rocha humorously replied, "You should be sitting here. I'm scared."
Lanza then joked back, "I'm not scared. I'm a Latino and I'm not scared," which elicited laughter from Rocha.
