Senator Jim Justice criticized government spending cuts and Democratic opposition, defending the Trump administration's cost-cutting initiatives and the DOGE program aimed at reducing wasteful expenditures.
Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., expresses frustration over what he perceives as excessive government spending, specifically calling out Senate Democrats for their opposition to cost-cutting measures introduced during the Trump administration.
Justice, who recently won a historically Democratic Senate seat in November, stated he has been taken aback by the political atmosphere in Washington since his arrival.
“I’m a new kid on the block in the Senate,” said the former governor of West Virginia during an appearance on "The Faulkner Focus."
He conveyed his astonishment at the actions of liberal Democrats in Washington, D.C., noting, “Watching the liberal Democrats in Washington, D.C., is absolutely shocking to me.”
As a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, Justice has publicly supported the administration's initiative to decrease federal expenditures.
Justice took to social media last month to announce his backing for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Initiative, stating, "I've joined 25 other Republican governors in supporting President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Initiative. The goal is to streamline government, cut wasteful spending, and balance the federal budget. Let's make it happen."
He defended DOGE's recent decision to cancel millions of dollars in federal grants, including over $100 million previously allocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training at the Department of Education.
“We don’t need to be sending tens of millions of dollars to people to teach them about Sesame Street, or tens and tens of millions of dollars to terrorist groups to teach them DEI,” Justice commented, referring to spending identified by DOGE.
Democratic leaders have criticized the necessary cuts, arguing that programs like DEI training are crucial for promoting fairness and inclusion in federal departments.
Justice refuted these claims, accusing Democrats of defending what he considers unnecessary expenditure.
“Why in the world you ... absolutely defend this unbelievable amount of waste? And they continue to do it,” he remarked.
DOGE announced last Wednesday that it had terminated at least 58 federal contracts, projecting taxpayer savings of over $150 million. President Trump has lauded DOGE's achievements, stating it had uncovered “massive amounts” of fraud, waste, and incompetence in government spending.
Justice urged fellow lawmakers to allow Trump’s administration to carry out its initiatives without interference.
“At the end of the day, we elected President Trump, and let him do his job,” he said. “For crying out loud, let him get his team in place and let him do his job.”
He concluded by expressing gratitude towards Elon Musk for his support, saying, “Thank goodness for Elon Musk, that he’s absolutely willing to do this and asking for nothing.”
Justice criticized Democrats for their reactionary tactics, suggesting they were “running through the streets with their hair on fire” to stir public alarm.
“That was the strategy they had in the election and they got their doors blown off,” he added.
