Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker faced criticism during the Eagles' Super Bowl parade for a lengthy speech, following a previous misspelling of the team's name that led to online mockery.
Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley recently shared his expectations for the Super Bowl parade at Raising Cane's.
However, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker found herself in the spotlight for a different reason. She has already made a spelling error during a speech regarding the Philadelphia Eagles, and it seems she may have also exceeded the word count in another speech.
During the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX victory parade held on Friday, Parker took to the podium to address the enthusiastic fans. Unfortunately, attendees began to boo her and chanted "Wrap it up!" when they felt her speech went on for too long.
Parker's remarks lasted over five minutes, while most other speakers kept their presentations brief.
The parade was not without incident, as Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was hit in the head with a beer can, leaving him bleeding, and a shooting occurred, resulting in injuries to two women.
The mayor's previous speeches regarding the Eagles have been a source of criticism, particularly in January before the team’s divisional playoff victory over the Los Angeles Rams on January 19. During that event, she attempted to spell out the team name but mistakenly spelled it as "E-L-G-S-E-S," which led to widespread mockery online.
Parker addressed her misspelling just days later at a press conference, stating, "We don't promise perfection, I'm so happy I never have, especially after I couldn't spell 'Eagles' right."
The misspelled name became popular enough to be turned into a T-shirt by Philly Goat, an independent Philadelphia sports apparel company.
Parker is currently in her first term after winning the 2023 mayoral election, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the city's history, defeating Republican David Oh. She previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2005-2015 and on the Philadelphia city council from 2015-2022.
