GOP Rep. Nancy Mace challenged Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett to a fight during a chaotic meeting of the House Oversight Committee.
Most Democrats have opted to remain silent in response to President Donald Trump's executive order banning transgender athletes from women's and girls sports. However, one Democrat spoke out against it and faced heavy criticism.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, voiced her opposition to Trump's executive order in a post on X on National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
Crockett's statement included:
- Banning trans kids from playing sports
- Attempt to cut Title IX women's and girls' athletics grants
- Removal of references to women, female, and equality on government websites
"LET ME BE CLEAR This. Doesn't. Protect. Women."
Crockett's criticism of Trump was met with fierce backlash from other X users, with one stating, "Nothing in your post is true. Transgender kids are not banned from playing sports—they just have to play on teams and in leagues where their sex matches the other athletes."
Another user accused Crockett of being misogynistic, writing, "Why do you care more about the feelings of some biological males over the rights and safety of women?"
Recent polls indicate that a majority of Americans, including Democrats, oppose transgender inclusion in women's sports. According to a New York Times/Ipsos survey, 79% of those polled said biological males who identify as women should not compete in women's sports.
Additionally, a national exit poll revealed that 70% of moderate voters found the issue of transgender athletes in girls' sports important, with a significant portion categorizing it as very important.
During previous discussions about transgender athletes, Crockett referred to her state and Florida as "deplorable" in the context of conservative legislation. She criticized Republican colleagues for being out of touch with women's needs.
