Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers has been given permission to seek a trade after expressing frustration with his role in the team's offense during the past season.
The San Francisco 49ers have granted Deebo Samuel permission to seek a trade, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Samuel had previously asked 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan for a trade during the team's exit meetings following the season. "It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle [Shanahan] because of the relationship that we have," Samuel told ESPN. "But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it's best that we find another team."
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport also reported that San Francisco was expected to explore trading Samuel this offseason. The wide receiver expressed frustration about his role in the 49ers' offense last season.
In the season, Samuel finished with 670 yards and three touchdowns on 51 catches over 15 games. He also rushed for 136 yards and scored another touchdown.
After a game against the Chicago Bears, where he had only two catches for 22 yards in a 38-13 victory on December 13, Samuel took to social media to express that he was "not struggling at all just not getting the ball." Although he deleted the post, he later admitted to reporters he was a "little frustrated."
His total of 806 yards from scrimmage last season marked the second-lowest of his career, significantly lower than the 417 yards he achieved in just seven games in 2020.
