Severe Storm Hits Sydney Causing Warnings for Residents
A huge storm is battering Sydney, prompting the State Emergency Service (SES) to warn residents of several major suburbs to remain indoors as conditions deteriorate.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Metropolitan, Central Tablelands and parts of Hunter, Illawarra, Central West Slopes and Plains, Lower Western and Upper Western Forecast Districts at approximately 11.20 on Monday morning.
"Thunderstorms are forming on a surface trough in a moist unstable air mass in inland NSW, assisted by an upper trough moving across the state," the warning stated.
"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, large hailstones and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours."
Major areas such as Gosford, Sydney, Orange, Katoomba, Dubbo and Parkes are at risk, with the SES advising residents to avoid leaving their homes if possible.
In Sydney, a stay indoors warning is effective for Horsley Park, Liverpool, Erskine Park, Leppington, Fairfield, Penrith, Richmond, Campbelltown and Sutherland.
