Senior Ukrainian Spy Agency Official Detained on Suspicion of Espionage
A senior official of Ukraine's Anti-Terrorism Center has been arrested on suspicion of espionage for Russia, revealing significant security breaches within the agency.
A senior member of Ukraine's spy agency has been detained on suspicion of being a Russian agent.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that the accused man was a senior official of the Anti-Terrorist Center.
Photos published on social media depicted the suspect being taken into custody on Wednesday morning, local time, by SBU head Vasyl Malyuk.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was informed of the operation, codenamed "rat".
The SBU confirmed that the man had been serving in his current capacity since 2016. Local Ukrainian media have identified him as Colonel Dmytro Kozyura.
The SBU stated, "It turned out that the chief of staff of the SBU's Anti-Terrorism Center was working for the enemy," detailing an "extremely complex" operation that included audio and video monitoring, as well as gaining access to mobile phones and computers.
Lieutenant General Malyuk disclosed that the suspect had sent information to his handlers in Moscow at least 14 times.
Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukraine claims to have conducted numerous operations and detained hundreds of individuals for allegedly colluding with Russia.
