The Senate confirmed Russell Vought as director of the Office of Management and Budget, enabling him to pursue a radical restructuring of the federal government reflecting Trump's agenda.
The Senate on Thursday voted to confirm Russell Vought as the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) with a 53-47 vote. This confirmation marks Vought's return to OMB, where he previously served toward the end of the first Trump administration.
Vought's confirmation is viewed as a green light for his ambitious plans to restructure the federal government in alignment with President Donald Trump's vision. Senate Democrats made significant efforts to delay Vought's confirmation, objecting to his commitment to transform the executive branch and limit Congress's financial authority.
The lengthy debate began late Wednesday and extended into Thursday, as speakers voiced their concerns regarding Vought's intentions to implement extensive changes. Despite the resistance, the Republican majority ultimately led to a predictable outcome, granting Vought substantial power to actualize his agenda.
As director of OMB, Vought will have the authority to put into action the vision he outlined in a chapter of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025. Notably, many of his proposed changes were reportedly initiated prior to his official confirmation, with plans for executive orders already being drafted by him and other former Trump officials.
