Tulsi Gabbard has been confirmed as the Director of National Intelligence under President Trump, overcoming Senate opposition with key Republican support. Her unique political journey includes switching to the Republican Party.
Tulsi Gabbard has officially been approved by the Senate to serve as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) under President Donald Trump. Her confirmation marks her as the 14th Cabinet member to be appointed during Trump's administration.
Despite facing significant opposition in the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Gabbard managed to rally support from key Republican senators. With the help of Chairman Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Vice President JD Vance, she garnered essential backing from senators such as Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Todd Young, R-Ind.
The vote took place on a party-line basis, advancing by a margin of 52-46, overcoming the objections raised by Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., and other Democrats who expressed doubts about her capabilities for the DNI role.
Warner criticized Gabbard's suitability for the position based on concerns regarding her past affiliations and stances, including a controversial meeting with former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. However, his arguments failed to sway any Republican senators.
Trump announced Gabbard's appointment in November, emphasizing her long service to the country and her bipartisan appeal. He expressed confidence in her ability to lead the intelligence community and uphold the nation's security and constitutional rights.
Notably, Gabbard has transitioned from the Democratic Party and has openly endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential election.
