Former President Donald Trump had initiated a lawsuit against X, previously known as Twitter, along with its then-CEO Jack Dorsey, in a federal court located in San Francisco. The lawsuit was a response to the decision made by Twitter to de-platform his account following the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, carried out by his supporters.
Twitter justified its decision by citing the potential risk of Trump inciting further violence as he attempted to contest his loss in the 2020 election against former President Joe Biden.
Trump asserted that this action by Twitter constituted a violation of his First Amendment right to free speech.
On Wednesday, John Kelly, one of Trump's lawyers involved in the case, confirmed that a settlement had been reached between Trump and X. "It's resolved," Kelly said during his statement to CNBC, although he declined to provide specifics about the details of the settlement.
CNBC has reached out to X's legal representation for a comment on the matter.
Prior to the settlement, Trump had been awaiting the results of an appeal concerning the dismissal of his lawsuit by a federal district court judge in 2022 for over a year. Recently, the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals approved a motion from all parties involved in the case to dismiss the appeal.
