Trump Proposal to Take Over Gaza Raises Alarms Over International Law Violations
President Donald Trump's proposal to "take over" Gaza and displace all of the Palestinians living there met with immediate alarm from the United Nations and others who said his plan would violate international law.
"Any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing," U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric told reporters Wednesday, in response to a question about Trump's proposals.
In remarks at a joint news conference Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump proposed that the United States take a "long-term ownership position" over Gaza, moving its residents to a "good, fresh, beautiful piece of land" in another country and developing the war-torn territory under U.S. control. While the president did not say that the 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza would be forced to move, many Palestinians living there have said they would not leave willingly -- even after nearly 16 months of war.
