The Trump administration terminated the inspector general of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Paul Martin, on Tuesday. This decision came just one day after Martin released a report criticizing the administration's freeze on foreign aid.
Martin's removal adds to a growing list of nearly 20 inspectors general dismissed by President Donald Trump, often amid concerns that such actions violate federal statutes designed to protect these watchdogs.
According to a White House official, Martin was informed via email that his position was "terminated, effective immediately."
The report issued by Martin's office highlighted that the recent spending freeze and cuts to USAID staffing made it more challenging to ensure that billions of U.S. funding were being allocated appropriately.
Officials from the State Department, USAID, the National Security Council, and the USAID inspector general's office have yet to provide a response to requests for comments on this matter.
Inspectors general play a crucial role in overseeing government activities and expenditures, thereby helping to prevent instances of waste, fraud, and abuse.
