President Donald Trump has found an unlikely ally in the Senate regarding his proposal to stop minting new pennies. Senator Jacky Rosen, a Democrat from Nevada, expressed her support for the initiative on Tuesday, labeling it a "common sense move."
Rosen, who represents a battleground state that both she and Trump won in the 2024 elections, took to social media to voice her agreement with the proposal. Over the weekend, Trump announced that he had "instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies," highlighting that the cost of minting a penny exceeds its actual value.
"For far too long, the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents," Trump remarked on Truth Social, advocating for the elimination of what he called waste in the national budget.
In her statement on X, Rosen noted, "I'm not afraid to embrace a good idea when it comes from the other side of the aisle, and I agree with President Trump on this." She emphasized that ending the penny circulation could save taxpayer dollars.
Other Democrats have also supported Trump's proposal. Governor Jared Polis from Colorado mentioned, "As well as saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, there are major environmental benefits to eliminating the penny. This is a great move." Rosen's and Polis's endorsements come amidst a broader push from the Democratic party to address governmental spending.
