Linda McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Education, will testify before the Senate on Thursday. Her opening remarks will focus on creating "a better future for every American learner."
McMahon's confirmation process will begin with a hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Republican Senators Tim Scott of South Carolina and Katie Britt of Alabama will introduce her.
In her remarks, McMahon will emphasize Trump's vision for education, stating, "education is the issue that determines our national success and prepares American workers to win the future." She will express gratitude to Trump for trusting her with a department that was central to his campaign, reflecting his pledge to improve American education and promote school choice.
Despite McMahon's nomination, Trump has recently indicated a desire to dismantle the Education Department. Just hours prior to her hearing, he stated he wanted to close it "immediately," calling the current educational system a "big con job." He cited the United States' low ranking in education while spending the most per pupil.
McMahon, a former administrator of the Small Business Administration, plans to illustrate her intentions during the hearing, stating, "Outstanding teachers are tired of political ideology in their curriculum and red tape on their desks." She aims to address concerns about antisemitism in schools and the inclusion of biological males in women's sports.
As Secretary of Education, she promises to prioritize parental rights in education and combat discrimination against Jewish students. McMahon believes that although many Americans face a declining education system, the coming years present a significant opportunity for reform.
Trump announced her nomination as Secretary of Education, highlighting her past experience and her commitment to expanding educational choice. Following McMahon's confirmation hearing, a committee vote will determine the next steps for her nomination.
