Kristi Noem Embraces Tough Leadership Amid Criticism in DHS Role
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem faces criticism for her wardrobe while allies praise her hands-on leadership style in securing the southern border and tackling illegal immigration.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is being celebrated by allies for her "South Dakota toughness" while facing criticism for her unique wardrobe choices as she secures the southern border and targets illegal immigration.
"Kristi Noem is the definition of South Dakota toughness and actually ran a working ranch for decades," said Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D. "She talks straight, works hard, and gets the job done."
Noem, confirmed on Jan. 25, has been actively involved in immigration operations. She participated in raids in New York City and toured the southern border on horseback.
Critics have targeted her attire, labeling her outfits "cosplay" and mocking her as "ICE Barbie" or "Border Patrol Barbie" for wearing a cowboy hat and protective gear during her duties.
Supporters argue that Noem’s clothing reflects her hands-on approach. Johnson emphasized, "If folks want to nitpick... they don’t understand her or South Dakota."
Noem has a history of swapping traditional Washington fashion for Western wear. She is also recognized for deploying National Guard troops to border states in 2022.
Growing up on a ranch, Noem’s rural background informs her commitment to solving problems directly. A source claimed that her critics oppose Trump’s immigration policies more than they oppose her leadership style.
"Many of her critics... include hurling petty insults at the Secretary of Homeland Security to undermine her," the source stated. "It won’t work. She’s sworn to do the job the president gave her."
