Deebo Samuel has officially requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers following the end of the recent NFL season. This came after a challenging discussion with head coach Kyle Shanahan, as Samuel expressed his desire to explore opportunities with other teams.
“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”
In response to the trade request, 49ers general manager John Lynch stated last month that the team has no plans to release their star wide receiver. “Deebo is under contract,” Lynch said. “[He’s] a good player and has done a ton for this organization, and we’re not in the business of letting good players out of here.”
After restructuring Samuel’s contract in September, the 49ers face significant financial implications if they proceed with a trade or release him before June 1, 2025—a potential $31.55 million dead money hit. However, if they do part ways after June 1, they could reduce that hit to approximately $10.75 million over the following years.
Samuel concluded last season with disappointing statistics, finishing with 806 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns, which are career lows except for a 2020 season where he played only seven games. Since joining the 49ers in 2019 after being drafted in the second round, Samuel has amassed 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 20 rushing touchdowns throughout his career.
