Canadians Disappointed by US Tariffs According to Ambassador Hillman
Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman expressed disappointment over US tariffs imposed by Trump, emphasizing confusion among Canadians and highlighting the strong partnership between the two countries.
Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman expressed disappointment and confusion regarding President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose tariffs on imports from Canada. In an interview, she stated, "Canadians are perplexed, I think disappointed. We view ourselves as your neighbor, your closest friend, your ally..."
Trump signed an executive order authorizing the tariffs, effective Tuesday. The order includes a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on imports from China.
When asked if Canadians felt betrayed, Hillman replied, "I think they're confused. I don't think they understand where this is coming from..." She emphasized the strong partnership between the U.S. and Canada, noting the daily movement of 400,000 to 500,000 people between the two countries.
Hillman acknowledged that Trump likely values the partnership with Canada, yet indicated uncertainty about the future following this decision.
Trump, while minimizing the potential impact on American consumers, stated that the tariffs would ensure fair treatment from other countries. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the tariffs were responses to illegal fentanyl flowing into the U.S. from Mexico and Canada.
In Trump's executive order, he blamed Canada for not sufficiently coordinating with U.S. law enforcement to combat illicit drugs.
