Alabama hires Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator
Alabama is set to hire Ryan Grubb as its offensive coordinator, reuniting him with Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer, according to sources at ESPN.
Grubb previously served as the offensive coordinator under DeBoer at Washington in 2022 and 2023, and was expected to join him at Alabama for the 2024 season. Instead, Grubb opted to remain in Seattle as the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator until last month.
For 2024, DeBoer appointed Nick Sheridan as offensive coordinator with JaMarcus Shephard serving as co-offensive coordinator. Both Sheridan and Shephard were part of DeBoer's staff at Washington and worked alongside Grubb.
Grubb will once again lead the offense, a role he undertook while working with DeBoer at Fresno State in 2020 and 2021. Their collaboration began in 2007 at the University of Sioux Falls, an NAIA institution and DeBoer's alma mater.
They subsequently worked together as assistants at Eastern Michigan and Fresno State, where Grubb remained after DeBoer left to take on the offensive coordinator role at Indiana.
The announcement of Grubb's hiring was first reported by Alabama's NIL collective, Yea Alabama.
During the 2023 season, Washington achieved a spot in the national title game and finished second nationally in passing. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was recognized as the Heisman Trophy runner-up and was later selected in the first round of the NFL draft.
In the upcoming season, Alabama will need to replace long-time starting quarterback Jalen Milroe and several others from a group that ranked 22nd nationally in scoring and 42nd in yards per game.
