Kelly initiated the scoring for the Rock on Friday night by netting his 21st goal of the season just 2:31 into the contest. He credited his teammate, Clark Scaddan, for his effort in winning the puck battle, stating, “Honestly, it was all Scads, his hard work, winning the puck battle and I was just open in the slot.” Kelly described his goal as a quick shot that he couldn’t see well due to its speed, but he was thrilled to hear the crowd's enthusiastic reaction.
Brant Romaniuk contributed to the score by adding his 12th goal of the season, increasing the Rock's lead to 2-0 just 24 seconds before the frame's midway point. However, the Paper Kings responded when former Rock forward Jack Anderson scored his 16th tally of the season a minute and a half later, marking the beginning of a competitive match.
