In a letter to his daughter, dated January 26, 1784, the eminent American statesman Benjamin Franklin expressed his disapproval of the adoption of the bald eagle as a symbol of America, calling it a "Bird of bad moral Character." Franklin's sentiments resonate with those feeling ambivalent about this weekend's Super Bowl LIX. The champions Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, but for viewers outside these markets, this matchup may seem dull.
As a resident of Philadelphia, I am proud of our team. If you're uncertain about whom to cheer for in the Big Game, here is my argument for supporting the Eagles.
The Chiefs garner interest for their potential third consecutive Super Bowl win. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes lifting yet another trophy would be a celebrated moment. However, this is precisely why they should not win.
Many view the Eagles unfavourably; their fans can be loud and annoying, and their play style may appear less glamorous compared to the Chiefs. The Eagles' signature play, the "tush push," showcases a simple, effective strategy that may not appeal to everyone.
In contrast, the Chiefs represent a polished, successful image that is easy to root for. Yet, America today is struggling. The sense of egotism and triumphalism surrounding the Chiefs feels presumptuous. Their seeming invincibility elevates them to a status that may not reflect the current state of the nation.
I prefer the ugly, gritty style of the Eagles. A strong defence that stifles high-flying plays, players who engage in banter, and passionate fans all embody a spirit that feels authentic. In an era where America needs a reflection of its own flaws, supporting the Philadelphia Eagles makes sense. They represent an endearing kind of toughness that resonates with the nation's current challenges. Go Birds.
